A New Obsession With Angels

There are spirits in the material world and they’re not all good ones. In fact, there’s a recent obsession with angels in certain church circles, such as the emergent church and the apostolic/prophetic movement.

But before we accept any angelic manifestation as something from God, let us not forget the "angel" Moroni whose image decks the walls and graces the roofs of Mormon temples everywhere. Joseph Smith must have figured, if it’s paranormal, it must be of God.

I was reminded of Moroni when I received an email recently from the "Elijah List" with the headline: "ANCIENT ANGELS OF ‘FAITH’ EMBEDDED in the Walls of Many Churches are being ACTIVATED!" (Emphasis in the original.)

Sounds like a trailer for a horror movie! But they are dead serious. Have you seen some of the depictions of "angels" in church architecture? Could they be talking about gargoyles implanted in both Catholic and Protestant cathedrals that can be seen peering through the corners of the beams in the ceilings? And when they’re "activated" will they resemble a scene from the movie Ghost Busters?

The announcement from Elijah List’s leader, Steve Shultz promoted the latest revelation of one of their "prophets" Bill Yount, from Blowing the Shofar Ministries, dated June 22, 2008. This was written in the thick of the Lakeland Uprising where the "angel" Emma is hard at work assisting with lying signs and wonders. From decades of observing the false prophetic movers and shakers, it is their pattern to start one-upmanship when some "new wind of doctrine" takes hold in their circles. There’s a whole lotta spiritual plagiarism going on. We’re reminded of this trend by the true prophet Jeremiah:

"’Therefore,’ declares the Lord, ‘I am against the prophets who steal from one another words supposedly from me. Yes,’ declares the Lord, ‘I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, 'The Lord declares. 'Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,’ declares the Lord. ‘They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least,’ declares the Lord." (Jer. 23:30-32).

Yount, who touts himself as a prophet" wrote in his article "Ancient Angels of Faith":

"I saw ancient angels of faith embedded in the walls of many churches. They are now being awakened and activated… These walls were not hanging by nails and wood, but were hanging on the very Word of God... Angels who were summoned generations ago to many churches through tear-stained altars, but were stifled in their assignments through unbelief and strife, were now being called forth to complete their assignments - even in churches that people were thinking, ‘This church will never see a move of God!’ But God was now honoring the prayers of many generations and a mighty breakthrough for so called ‘dead’ churches was now inevitable!…As these ancient angels of faith began to awaken inside of these walls and began stretching their wings, generational walls of tradition and division began to crumble as religious spirits were being cast out by the presence of God!"

Steve Shultz added his two cents to confirm Yount’s ridiculous assertion. Schultz introduced Yount’s article saying:

"Science can now prove that "matter" (that is hard things like rocks and walls) does have memory. And we also know that angels are spirit beings and are also outside of time as we know it....even Jesus said that the very rocks would cry out if the people didn't praise Him and we even have Scripture for rocks being more "alive" than anyone of us would believe."

I don’t know about you, but there some angels in the architecture that I wouldn’t want to see come alive. We know that there are plenty of fallen angels who disguise themselves as angels of light – the devil being the big Kahuna. They appear to be manifesting all over the "Christian" landscape right now since the climate in the church for acceptance of anything supernatural is at an all time high – discernment at an all time low.

Someone captured one of these angels of light manifesting at an outdoors meeting of people chanting in Spanish that is very disturbing when some weird thing showed up and is said to be an angel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gW1dEw4qSjY

New Mythology

Leading the charge of angelolatry is none other than Todd Bentley – and he does so rebelliously. One observer who visited the Lakeland Uprising spoke about Bentley’s "in your face" exaltation of angels. On a radio broadcast called "Live From Seattle" on July 17, 2008, guest Rob Ricciardelli told host Ken Talbott about the efforts of holy-laughter guru Rodney Howard-Browne to talk sense to Bentley.

Ricciardelli: "Rodney Howard Browne met with Todd early on in the Lakeland meetings and said ‘Todd, my advice to you is do not talk about angels, do not get off on angel Emma, preach the word of God and see what God does.’ And Todd agreed with him, and the very next day in defiance of what this man who had been through some of these revival type stuff has gone through, he said somebody recently told me, I’ve had people tell me that I’m not going to talk about angels, and he went in to begin to chant and get the crowd chanting…"

They cut to a YouTube clip of Bentley calling down angels:

Bentley: "Let the angels come down with fire; I’m not done yet then angels, angels, angels, angels (on and on while crowd goes wild) Come on say it with me, "God I’m asking that heaven would open and ministering spirits, angels of glory, angels of healing, warring angels, that they would be released out of the heavens.. And I want to lift every voice and call them down out of heaven. Angels, angels, angels (chanting on and on)…come on God send them (shouting) Send the angels (repeats screaming louder )-- send angelic hosts, I need angels, warring angels, healing angels, I need angels. I need angels of revelation, I need the angelic realm…"

Ricciardelli: "Todd went into that angel routine the day after meeting with Rodney and if that’s not worshipping angels, it’s coming very, very close."

Bentley’s angels sound more like descriptions we read of aliens from those who have had close encounters of the third kind. He can be seen giving his wild story of being abducted by them and then operated on in what he describes as looking like "an autopsy room."

"I’m wrestling with God he says ‘get in the pillar of fire’ so I get in to the pillar of fire – as soon as I get in to the pillar of fire my entire body starts going RAAAAAAR and I go up through the church roof in the pillar of fire, it’s transporting me- I’m in the pillar of fire, its like beam me up, up through this pillar, I’m through the church roof and all of a sudden I, I land, when I say land I mean crash on an operating table in heaven … I’m in this room appear four angels … two angels stood on the other side of the operating table and honest truth they wrenched me down, I don’t know what it was they tied me down with but all of a sudden my hands and my ankles were fastened to this table but don’t tell me, this is a little graphic. … And all of a sudden I hear this sound like a miter saw rrrrrrrr a miter saw like one of those things before brain surgery, they rrrr . y’know they cut your skull , they pick this thing up and… they stuck it in me right here on my neck and it didn’t hurt but here’s what happened they went (sound of cutting him open) right down to my lowards and all of sudden my stomach went pooch and everything inside of me popped out onto the table, my heart, my liver like everything. And I’m lying there and you want to scream because you think it should hurt but it doesn’t hurt. and you’re lying there and you’re arrr arrr all your insides are, here's the strangest thing. so then here’s what happens the angels start taking these white boxes… and they start stuffing these things inside of me. They’re stuffing these boxes all over and I heard the verse ‘I desire truth in the inward parts.’"

Todd describes angels showing up in his meetings in Lakeland, but he doesn’t say if they look the same way as the surgical ones on his autopsy table. In another YouTube clip posted on July 10, 2008, Bentley’s guest was false prophet Paul Cain who came to give his ministry mantle to Bentley and identify him as the long-awaited "new breed." Bentley told Cain, "When you came out here tonight Paul, the angelic activity was released in the stadium…the angelic was just released and it was going (spins his hand around in circles) crazy in the stands."

This angel that causes spinning activity was also described by one of signs & wonders groupies in the stadium. Ignited Church’s pastor, Stephen Strader, who initially invited Todd Bentley to his church in Lakeland, sent me the testimony of Robert Butler, dated June 30, 2008, in an effort to convince me of the divine origin of the so-called outpouring. Butler testified:

"I remember the two times during the week that I was twirled around by an angel. That has only happed six or seven times in my life and yet it happened twice in Lakeland. An angel twirls me around in a circle and I can’t get out of it until the angel releases me out of the whirlwind. I am thrown out of the whirlwind and hit the ground, never have been hurt and it is an incredible experience where I have absolutely no control over what is happening. …These are prophetic whirlwinds that I have no idea what is done and their purpose. But something is set in motion from them. I was surprised when the first one occurred during the fire wall for the offering. I was actually amazed it happened then. That was the first time in a long time, and then to have another whirlwind happened a few days later was most amazing to me and I have no answers as to why two in such a short period of time. Once they are started, I am at the complete mercy of the angel that is doing the twirling. It starts out slow and then quickly goes to a very fast twirling in a circle and creates a whirlwind effect in the spirit… I already mentioned the fire tunnel that was taken from the offering. If you wanted to give in the offering, you went up to the fire tunnel at the front and put the money in the buckets that the people creating the fire line held at the front of the platform. The closer I got to it the harder it was to walk. And when I got within five feet or so, the twirling started that I mentioned before."

It sure sounds like Robert Butler was the butt of a joke in the spirit realm. I can just hear the demonic hosts having a big laugh over him. I wonder if this is the same angel that, according to Extreme Prophetic hostess Patricia King, comes around dropping fairy dust upon people.

One Lakeland enthusiast has published pictures of what she thinks are angels showing up that look no different than the supposed pictures of ghosts seen on television programs featuring haunted houses.

And Todd Bentley also gives a wild story of an angel showing up like lightening and sticking his fist into his belly. One heck of an angel of light – by his own testimony.

Bible teacher Tony Pearce, of Light for the Last Days ministry in London, responded to Bentley’s defense for such strange paranormal activity. He wrote:

"According to Todd Bentley his supposed miracles are to confirm belief in ‘the angel’. Bentley related at one of his meetings, ‘God why would I want people to believe in the angel? Isn’t it about getting the people to believe in Jesus?’ The response came back ‘The people already believe in Jesus, but the church does not believe in the supernatural.’ Since the Bible forbids worship of angels and in no place says that angels perform miracles, why does ‘God’ tell Bentley something which contradicts scripture?"

Could it be that Bentley and other charismaniacs are not hearing from the true God, but from the god of this world? Could these angels of light have a hidden agenda in playing such sadistic games with those hungering for signs and wonders? What is their next move? Who are their next victims? Those who give over their faculties to another power and passively submit to forces they wrongly believe to be benevolent. Soaker beware!

"I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed"
(Galatians 1:6-9).
